Curly hair: 5 mistakes to avoid!

Unless you’re aiming for a Nappy Hair style, you should never detangle curly hair when it’s dry. You risk disrupting the beautiful curl pattern and ending up with less defined hair. The best method is to detangle gently. Ideally? First, gently massage the hair while shampooing, and of course, apply a treatment afterward. Detangle curly hair gently using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.

1. Curly hair: never detangle it when dry

Unless you're going for a Nappy Hair style, never detangle curly hair when it’s dry. You risk breaking up your beautiful curls and losing definition. Ideally, always detangle gently. The best method? Start by gently massaging the scalp during shampooing, and of course, follow with a conditioner or treatment. Detangle your curls carefully using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.

2. Don’t neglect hydration

Depending on your hair texture, check the bounce and movement of your curls! If your hair tends to be dry, hydration and nourishment should be your top priorities — especially if you want well-defined, shiny curls. Apply nourishing hair masks to the lengths and ends, but avoid weighing them down. Treat your hair to an oil bath from time to time — it’s always beneficial. You can also use hydrating two-phase treatments. There are many options available, but the key is: keep your beautiful curls moisturized!

3. Avoid the wrong brush!

Say no to fine, hard-bristle brushes — they can damage your scalp and disrupt your curls. The same goes for combs that are too narrow, as they can cause breakage more easily! To avoid weakening the hair, it's best to start detangling from the bottom up. Begin with the ends, then move to mid-lengths to prevent knot buildup. Avoid brushing straight from the roots down. But if you’ve followed the first tips, your fingers or a wide-tooth comb are your best tools!

4. Drying curly hair without a diffuser

If you want defined curls and frizz-free hair, you need to help your curls take shape! One of the golden rules: dry your hair on a low heat setting and always with a diffuser attachment. Ideally, start by gently pre-drying your wet hair with a towel. Don't rub — blot carefully to absorb as much moisture as possible. Then apply a styling cream and dry with a diffuser, always moving gently. Get ready for compliments on your perfect curls — but shh, don’t give away your secrets!

5. Cut curly hair when dry

First, depending on your curl pattern, check the bounce and movement of your curls! Most professional stylists will cut curly hair dry — why? Simply because curls shrink once dry, and if you cut them wet, the final result might be shorter than expected. If you don’t follow this rule, you might be in for an unpleasant surprise…
